Default 993 or 996 which is cheaper to maintain

looking to buy a 993 from 96 to 98. just wondering is it cheaper to maintain the newer 996's then the older 993? What should I be looking for when I make this choice.

Labor rates are substantiallly higher on a 993. They are not fun to work on.

Why is this? Is the 996 engineered to be easier to service? In what way?

How are 993 as far as reliability / service?

Just the design of the cars themselves. Ever worked on a 928 before? It doesn't matter what you are repairing, you have to take half the car apart to get to what you are fixing, lol. The 993 is not nearly as bad, but still more dificult than the 996. The 996 is using newer technology, etc, which in my opinion is going to lead to fewer problems. Ever try and change the #6 spark plug on a 993? Yea, that is about a 3-4 hour job, just for that 1 plug due to the power steering pump. In my opinion, they are completely different cars, it is very hard to compare the two. One is aircooled, and is watercooled, the list goes on. Both cars are very reliable, i would say a 996 is probably more reliable, but it is also newer. The 993's have held their values very well, where as the 996's have greatly depreciated due to supply (over) and demand (not due to any reliability issues, etc).
