Default Black smoke

Hi Guys,

I recently had check engine light on, took it in and the code was for one of the oxygen sensor, replaced it, and everything has been fine, until this afternoon, I noticed a lot of carbon build up on the drives side exhaust tip, and very little on the passenger side. I even noticed thatthe drivers side exhaust was kinda puffing a little black smoke, just enough to barely notice.

I throughly washed the car over the weekend, and cleaned both exhaust tips very well, that is why I nocticed the build up on just the one tip more so than the other.

Thank you for any help, and for those of you who have helped me out in the other post thank you as well.

Default RE: Black smoke

Usually when O2 sensors go out, they should be replaced in pairs. IE, if the O2 sensor ahead of the cat (pre cat) on the drivers side goes out, you should replace it and the post cat O2 on that side. Ideally i would like to see all 4 replaced if one goes out, as in my experience, the other 3 will not be far behind. I have had numerous cars had an O2 sensor go out, replaced that side, and a month later the other side goes out and the customer is right back in the shop again. Granted it can be fairly expensive to do all 4 at once, though it is an easy DIY job in my opinion, and the book time for the sensors is something like 3 hours, when it takes about 15-30 minutes. Maybe it's because i have small hands.
