Default Dashboard lights...?

Just picked up a 97 993 over the weekend...yeah!
Car has an annoying problem (dealing with it, but really needs to get sorted out), the dashboard instrument lights seem to work rather randomly. What I mean is, sometimes when you turn on the headlights, the instruments light up, and sometimes not. Sometimes they will stay on for the entire drive and sometimes only stay on about 4 seconds. Turning the headlights on/off (or wiggling the ****) makes no difference (same with the intensity ****).
Suspected that the relay might be bad and attempted to test it. Unfortunately, not have a diagram for the relay I don't know what the output of each "peg" should be when 12 volts is put through it (+ and -).
Does anyone know these values? If the relay turns out to be good what other troubleshooting can I do short of taking to a shop to have the entire dash torn appart?

Thanks
oh, also ...squeeky breaks?

Mike
