Hello Wow you will love it. There are people who know more than I do but I have two small facts to contribute.

The standard 996 version changed the engine on 2002. They may have done that at some Vin break for the Turbo's at some year. You should ask that my quess is it was 2004. The change other than HP was varible valave lift in addition varible valve timing. This change give the engine more torque at lower RPM's.
I do not know if Turbos where even changed or maybe they always had it. On the standard 911 it makes a hugh difference in engine performance.

As the years moved forward there was a perfornamce package called ( I think) "X" package. It raised the HP from 415 to 454. I think towards the end of 996 production it was almost standard.

I have a 996 Porsche and as much as I love it it feels dated compared to the 997. My view is the 996 is a perfect car! It is amazing Porsche can do the impossible and improve on it and create the 997.

You may like a 997 over the 996 Tubo. 997 S They are pretty good.

I think Lee is pretty much right on. the 996 turbo is a fantastic value right now. it isboth fun and easy to drive, is reliable and inmy opinion,much better looking than then.a. 996. Ihave not driven the x50 (this is the 450bhp version Lee mentions) but the regular 996 tt is rather rapid, and can easily and inexpensively be modded to 500+. To save money, you may want to look only up to 2001 models- these can be found in the low $50ks. Later versions added a glovebox, but to my knowledge did not see any changes to the engine. And as the engine is the best porsche has in terms ofoverall reliability and performance, it probably doesn't makes sense to pay$20k+more for a low mileage 03 or 04 if you plan to keep it for a while.

Back to the x50- you can find examples from around $60k and up, so those represent relatively better value, i suppose. if you want a TT convertible, those are quite a bit pricier because they are only available as 2004 on and are much rarer, in addition to the premium that convertibles usually carry.

now the 997s is, i hate to admit, the better car. it is basically as fast as the TT, and in the 4s version, even MORE surefooted. also note, if you want a tiptronic, the 997's is a big leap forward over the one used in the 996.

997 does cost more, and is likely to see more depreciation over the years than a 996tt that you buy today.

with any porsche, you are not getting a very "modern" engine (the 911 engine is a 30 year work in progress, no?), but the 997s gets you into the verylatest 911, which is always something special.

I have a 2001 996TT tiptronic with 36km on the clock. There are a few books out there if you want to do some research in terms of model/year and tech specs. The Porsche Data Book and Porsche 911 story hold a bunch of tech information, the later gogin through engine suspension gearbox, brakes changes over the years. It does contain info on the turbo models upto 997.

I haven't driven a 997TT but know it does things a little better including suspension, 4WD power management. That said for the price of a 996TT you get a lot of go fast, and it is completely controlled about how the power is put to the road.

From the Porsche servicing intervals and talking to the Porsche techs theses cars are quite a reliable drive.
