O2 Oxygen Sensor

O2 Oxygen Sensor
I have a 99 Porsche 996 that needs 2 oxygen sensors replaced. How much money am I looking at to repair. Also, besides the check engine light coming on, can I still drive it for a short time before having replaced or will this cause damage possibly. Thank you.

Sensors are about $200 each, and about an hour to replace them.

Doc the dealer told me their were 4 sensors and I had 2 bad. Any chance I had a different sensor that is more expensive? When I took the 1999 911 in for annual service they told me the sensors where showing failure with their plug in CPU. They said they were surprised I did not have an "engine service" light yet.
Sure enough 3-4 weeks later the light came on.
Comments.

RE: O2 Oxygen Sensor
Yes there are 4 sensors total, 2 on each side. If one goes bad, you always replace that one, with the other one on the same side. They are just bosch sensors (no differences), which the dealer marks up probably 200% over retail.

What tools will I need to replace . I have the diagram to follow. Size etc to remove the sensor. My codes are P1123 and P1125. Are these part 993-606-118-01 or 993-606-128-01 for my 99 porsche 996, post or pre catalitic ? Thank you. -Kip

RE: O2 Oxygen Sensor
You need a 22mm wrench for the sensors. Those are the sensors. The 993 part number is the post cat sensor. I would imagine the standard wrench size would be a 15/16 or a 7/8?

RE: O2 Oxygen Sensor
Your problem may not be oxygen sensors - It may be the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. My '99 996 also thru those OBDII codes, but replacing the MAF ($260-$300 mail order) fixed the problem. All you need is the right security torx bit (a torx bit with a hole in the bit end) to replace the sensor, and it takes all of about 5 minutes.
