Ive heard a lot about SSI heat exchangers ans was wondering if thats what I should go with for my '88 Carrera and whereI might be able to find a cheaper used pair or new pair if need be? Any other products compare to the SSI?

SSI have some of the best quality and sounding heat exchangers/headers for these cars. I would go with them if you can.

Yes, I'm considering this upgrade for my 83SC.
Where to buy? New vs. used? I have heard that different grades of steel may be used for this part and I want the best. Please provide any info you may have.
Also, what muffler to pair with?
Thanks.
