Maybe Doc can comment on 996 leaks vs model year. My 2004 C2 has 30k miles and has never leaked a drop of oil.
Tends to be the earlier model years of the 996, but the leaks are seen occasionally on even the 997's. They have continued to update the rear main seal, and it is getting better, but can still happen on any m97 engine case (boxster, 996C2/4, 997C2/4) TT's do not have this issue as they still use the traditional 911 case. The m97 is a japanese design.

I think the 2002's and before had an issue with the rear main seal.It is a really cheap part butvery labor intensive to fix. plus, they usually replace the clutch while in there.But, I don't think itwas as big of a deal as everyone said. from what I heard, if it doesn't show by 15k miles, it probably isn't going to happen.

Doc will be able to answer better though.
