RE: what year 911 should i buy
Steve,
I would chose a 1995 or newer model. The handling and comfort is much better. Most Porsche people like the 993 varaint of the 911. These are the last air cooled engine and were produced untill 1998. Most Porsche people like the appearance of these models over the 1999-2004 996, 911 varaint. I had a 1999 911 and just traded it in for a new 997 Cab. The car was perfect to me. You will notice the 997 looks more like the 993 as Porsche tried to return to the more popular 911 look.
The 1999-2001 (996) will be cheaper and a very good car. The 993 will be good but a bit more expensive which attests to the desireability of these last air cooled cars. If you want water cooled and a little more punch HP wise try for a 2002911. I beleive the base engine is basically the same as todays new models.
I am not aware of anyissues with any of the cars 1995 or newer. I know there were some rust issues for the first 1999 porsches but it was slight. They also tend to break radiator overflow bottles in a few years but this is all minor stuff.
So if resale is important 1995-1998
If value and you want a cab,1999-2001
Slightly better performance go for a2002 or newer
If you want to go in debt the 997 is a little better than the other models for handling and refinement, but I like them all.
Good luck to you

Spend a few more $$$'s and get yourself an '02 911 like I did I was originally considering a Boxster S, but when an opportunity came up, I was able to make the acquisition for the 911 and am loving very minute of it.

Go for a 2002 if you can throw a little more cash at this. I ended up getting a low miles 2004 and love it. I've read that the 1999-2001 are a little gutless. that said 'gutless' is relative with these cars. -Simon
