Default What's under the black finish?

Love those German cars...Finished my 91 500SL last fall and have just picked up a restoration project of a 1983 911/930 turbo look Targa Carrera. Lots of research and questions to come but one I hope easy one for now. Can the black finish on the 83 rolbar be successfully polished off. I'd prefer a polished aluminum look rather than redoing the black coating. Has anyone on the forum ever accomplished this and if so is the approach the same as that used to polish out the fuchs wheels? THANKS
