1980 924 Turbo (931) - Interference engine??
Hey all,
I've got a chance to aquire a 1980 924 Turbo that has been sitting for many years. 55K miles, i believe the timing belt was changed prior to it sitting...but that was 15 years ago when it was finally parked. So, i'm going to change the timing belt before i even try to turn it over. I was wondering... is the 924 Turbo an interference engine? Also, does it have an auto tensioner?
Thanks!
Shamus

RE: 1980 924 Turbo (931) - Interference engine??
I know the 2.0 NA engine was a non interference engine, but for some reason it is sticking in my mind that the 931 was indeed an interference engine. I can do some research and let you know for sure.

got any tips for me? I've done timing chain replacements on old 86 toyota turbo pickups...and there's always some hidden bolt, or some trick to make it easier.Hopefully it's not as involved...
With a 22r/re/rte engine:2
remove radiator + hoses
removepully belts
remove distributor cap
remove valve cover
Find TDC, mark distributor, pop crank bolt of by bumping starter with breaker bar against frame
Find TDC again (lol)
Remove powersteering pump
Remove water pump
Remove hamonic balancer
Remove oil pump
remove oil pan front bolts
remove distributor
remove hidden bolt underneath oil
remove timing cover
remove cam gear
(and that's just to get to the timing chain)....

RE: 1980 924 Turbo (931) - Interference engine??
It's pretty straight forward.
Remove the belt cover.
Loosen the tensioner wheel.
Remove old and put on the new belt.
Tension until you can only twist the belt 90°.
If it whines after tensioning, you have it too tight. Back it off slightly.
New belts are cheap. Valves are VERY expensive!
