It really depends on what you are looking for: a quick 4 cyl or a powerful V-8. IMHO, they are both very nice, but very different autos.
I have never drive a 944, so I can only answer 1/2 your question. My 928 is fast (not necessarily 0-60, 40-120 is a blast!), handles well,and comfortable. I do all the work myself, so it has not cost me an arm and a leg. I do have funds set aside as "just in case". And, I drive it every day.
Remeber, there is no such thing as a cheap porsche. Buy the newest and nicest you can afford and have fun. It is wise to get a PPI by a knowledgeable 928 or 944 mechanic, not just a porsche mech.
