When you say throw a code, are you using a blink tester on the diagnostic port?

There is no check engine light in these cars.
Sorry, hadn't had time to check for a CEL, just assumed it had one, as they are common on other vehicles going back to the early '80's.

In the meantime, I've found that the reason the 87b/30 contacts don't close is the DME not providing a ground. The solenoid for that set of contacts are getting the 12v from the other relay, which has to close to provide it to the solenoid in question. As I indicated earlier, both relays work correctly, no solder/continuity problems within the circuit board.

The reason the contacts do not close, is the DME must provide a ground to the other side of that solenoid.

So basically I've pinned it to one output of the DME, which leaves us where we were, but with more exact information.

Haven't yet got to the two senseors you mentioned; one of them is now the mostl likely problem, and lastly the DME (guessing here, but basing that on pure electronics (the chip), vrs a mechanical/electrical sensor which are more prone to failure.

Just updating... thanks yet again.

Oh, anyone have a schematic for the DME chip? Would help a lot. Also, Haynes says the DME is under the left side of the steering, inside... but I read somewhere else that it under the passenger side floor mat.

not much help from me as I have a similar no-start problem. But I do know that the DME on the pre 1985 1/2 models can be found under the steering wheel, lay on your back with your head on the floor and it will be right above you. It is in the other position on the later models.

I've replaced the DME, Fuel relay, fuel pump and filter, and I have spark, but no start. With a squirt of ether in the air filter the engine tries to run, but it appears that there is no fuel getting to the cylinders.

The 87 DME is under the passenger floorboard (front). DME chips also do not go bad, instead the circuit board does. I wouldn't waste any time trying to figure out the chip at this point. Check your sensors before anything else.
