While experiencing problems relating to intermittant break-downs I installed these new parts in hopes of getting the 944 running better. Ignition wires, plugs, cap/rotor, DME relay, fuel pump/check-valve and filter, battery, timing/balance belts and rollers. The car runs really well now but I seem to have picked up a minor hesitation/power loss at around 3000rpms that resembles a minor missfire. Any ideas? Couldmy old coil be doing this? Thanks.

 

Could be a coil, but also could be a deadspot in the TPS or the AFM meter.

 

I'll guess the throttle position sensor (TPS).

 

Two weeks ago while trying to find the glitch that was making the car shut off while driving, the mechanic who works on my car showed me the TPS and how it had become wet(don't remember his exact description) but he bypassed an inlet or something that allowed condensation to form inside the unit. He said this wasa common prob with early944s in the winter.The inside of my TPS wasliterally soaking wet when he brought it over to show me atmy shop next door. I wonder ifthey did something when they had it apart that would havecreated this dead spot. Other than theglitch that was shutting the car down every week or two, theengine was runningas smooth as silkthroughthe 3000 rpm range. I think I may bite the bullet and order a new one. If it doesnt solve the problem I will have one less part to worry about. Thanks for the suggestions willard and Doc.

 

My guess is the water in an electrical component is what created the deadspot. He capped the port on the throttle body from the thermovalve. It was used to keep the throttle body from freezing in cold weather.

 

Yes Doc, that isexactly what he did. He mentioned that this was a common problem that they encountered frequentlywhile he was still a tech at the local Porsche dealer (and 944s were still on the assembly line).I havnt noticed any posts or comments relating to this areaanywhere, but might assist the odd 944 ownerwho is looking for a solution to poor performance when residing in regions of exteme cold temps.
