clucth
i just got a 1983 944 with only 93k on it. the guy said the clutch was going out and had a new one with the car so i drove it home, i started the car with it in gear and the clutch down. it let out in first fine and when i shifted into second it went into gear but then the peddle droped to the floor and stayed. i checked the peddle and it either stays all the way down or all the way up. any ideas? the guys at my dads shop are thinking the slave cylender is out.
The slave is very easy to replace, it is the bleeding the system which is a pain in the butt. Remove your starter underneath the car at the rear of the bellhousing, above it is the slave cylinder. Held on by 2 13mm (head size) bolts. Undo the hard fluid line, and remove the slave. Installation is opposite of removal. Once you get it swapped, you need to bleed the system. Same concept as bleeding the brakes. A lot easier if you have a motive power bleeder, but can be done with two people the old fashion way. I would also replace the master cylinder while you are at it, that way you only have to bleed the system once. It is harder to get to, but can be done with racheting wrenches and 1/4" rachets. It is hidden down by the brake booster on the drivers side firewall. Again 2 13mm nuts IIRC, the hardline, and the connection inside the car at the clutch pedal. www.clarks-garage.com should be able to guide you through it in his shop manual.
Probably, but you want to replace them in pairs, it is pretty typical that one goes out, and the other is shortly there behind it. Also check the line going from the master to the slave. There is a rubber section in it that likes to crack, but you should be noticing leaks if it is.
Have you crawled underneath the dash on the drivers side. Pull up the carpet, or feel around for it being wet. Usually when the master goes, it leaks down the inside of the firewall in the interior, and soaks the carpet.
