Default clunking

I have a 86 944 5spd with 58,000 miles.
My son took it to Prom he overreved it and dumped the clutch. The car went 100ft and started to make a loud clunking and the rear tires shake. the clutch works fine but when you try to drive it you hear and feel the loud clanking. It even clanks when you try to push the car when it is out of gear.

I bet he sheared off the CV bolts at the transaxle. There are 6 bolts holding each axle to the transmission on each side. I bet he snapped the bolts on one side, and the clunking you are hearing is the axle. Just look underneath the rear for a loose axle and if so, 6 new bolts and you should be good to go. You can replace the 12 points with allen heads if you want.

I took off the ruber inspection cover off the trans axle.
when you let the cluch out, the shaft going into the trans axle spins for a couple of seconds, then you hear the clunking and then both tires spin while still making the clunking.
With the back wheels off the ground, some thimes they counter spin and some times they don't.
Is this a trans axle problem or still a drive axle problem?
Any idea if it is a trans axle where to find one cheap?
thanks for all you help!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it is the trans, what years will fit?
I talked with a junk yard and he said a 85 would work but he doesn't think the spedo will work, is that true?

Well, then sounds like the ring and pinion is shot, and time for a new tranny. Any 85.5 and on 944 NA transmission should fit just fine.
