Default Engine noise

Just put the head on my 83 944, got it timed, and fired it up. I noticed it's making a clacking noise in the valve train area. The head was off for 10 months. Could the cam followers have gone flat? (leaked down?) If they did, is there any way to pump them up again? Could it be a different problem? Doc I need your advice! I might have to just sell it cause I don't think I can afford to sink any more money into it right now. Thank you!

If it is a loud ticking, then yes, the cam followers have probably gone soft. Usually when you take the head off, you should lay the followers face down and fill them with oil so they will stay firm. It should get better with some driving as they slowly fill back up. If not, then you will have to pull the cam tower and replace the soft followers.
