Default fuel pump need help

I ordered a new fuel pump for my 87 turbo and it is about 1/2 the diameter of the one I am replacing. I am sure it is the right part number but not sure if it is the right part - has anyone else ever changed their pump and if so did you have the same experience? I am not sure if I should put it on or not - the local dealer was no help.....
I have already replaced the filter and the fuel pressure regulator hoping the pump is the reason it won't start.

Stupid question, but did you replace the dme relay before questioning the pump working or not? Every pump i have replaced has been the same, but maybe the incorrect pump was in there to start with....or an aftermarket pump.
