I have an 85/1 944 that I juswt replaced the inner tie rods on. The ones I took off were about a half inch longer than the new ones. I checked the part numbers for the replcements and it was correct. How can I find out if the new ones go with the power steering rack I have. There is still about 3/4 of an inch adjustmen on these, but the ones I took off had an inch. (indise the outter tie rod ends). This car has had many owners and I am not sure the steering parts are original, it still has steel a arms and spindals appear to be original. Is there a length difference by year steering rack?

 

The tie rods are a different length (longer) on 1987 and later cars. Sounds like someone might have installed later tie rods by mistake, or had manual steering rods on.

 

Is 3/4 inch of thread in the outers enough, should I try 87s? dont know why they would fit right.

 

No, if you are using steel trailing arms, you need to use the early offset tie rods. Just make sure they are power steering tie rods, and not manual steering tie rods.
