New 944 Owner - HELP!
Hi. I've just bought my 1988 2.5litre 944 LUX and absolutely love it BUT it has a couple of 'minor' but annoying problems.
The boot doesn't seem to lock... i've pushed it down softly, hard, held it down whilst locking it and can't think of any more combinations. Does it sound like its broke?
The electric windows are very slow and on;y just get to the bottom. Is this normal?
The headlight washer jets don't function but the windscreen ones do.
The radiator cooling fan stays on after the engine is turned off....firstly is this normal and should it last hours?? It also seems to sponatneously startup sometimes.
If anyone can help on any of these issues i would be very grateful. Thanks

On the (boot) rear hatch. The two pegs that extend down into the holes on the body of the car need adjusting. Look into those holes with the hatch up and operate the key, you should see a "plate" that slides back and forth, that is what holds onto those pegs. Adjusting them will bring them down far enough that the plate captures them.
If you have washer nozzels for the windscreen that work, you are lucky. I didn't think that the lux (944 n/a on this side of the pond) had washers for the headlights.
Radiator fans are supposed to operate after shut down to cool the water in the radiator, they should not run "for hours".

Ok thanks for your advice about the hatch....i will try at the weekend.
The car certainly has headlight washer spay nozzles....guess i will have to have a deeper look around and see whats happening.
Thanks

The radiator fans are controlled by a coolant temp switch located on the radiator (should be the passenger side for you, I am assuming your steering wheel is on the "wrong side", right? lol). If your fans are staying on overly long, thats usually the first place to look.
The windows can be annoyingly slow... you can clean up the electrical contacts and make sure your ground is good, and lube up the window tracks to see if it helps. If the window motor is working, its probably not the problem, altho they are getting pretty old at this point.
The headlight nozzles are not something I have spent a whole lot of time worrying about, as the 944's that I have owned that had them were always track cars and so they got removed in short order. I can't recall for sure, but I thought they have a separate pump for the headlight washers, and of course separate lines that run along the front of the car. Otherwise, I am guessing it might be a problem with your control stalk at the steering wheel.
Regards,

How long does the fan stay on? The fans should run for a short while after the car is shut off and can (but never do) turn on even when the engine has been off for a while. The switch is an easy enough fix but you have to remove the fans (the entire assembly comes out pretty easily) and drain the radiator. When you drain the radiator be sure to tape a little home made cardboard funnel under the drain plug or fluid will run everywhere. You could also have a bad cooling fan relay. When the fans are running too long disconnect the fan switch (a tough reach if the fan is in the car). If the fan shuts off it is probably the switch if they keep running it is probably the relay. If when the fans are running they don't seem to be running that fast it may also be the relay. And finally, if the key is in the aux mode (not off but not started) or started and the AC button is pressed (even if the blower is off) the fans will run on low even if the engine is cold. If this is happening then your problem is more than likely the switch.
My 1986 944 Turbo has a problem with the fan.
It stays on even after the car has been turned off for several hours, even to the extent that it will run down the battery.
When I charge the battery even after letting it cool overnight the fan picks right back up where it left off prior to the battery draining.
I have had to unplug the relay in order to turn it off.
At other times it will turn off as expected shortly after the car is turned off
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Replace your coolant temp switch, and that should take car of the problem. It is located near the top of the radiator, on the driver's side (just to the side of the fan).
The fan stays on until the battery dies
One thing I have found out is that if I turn the air conditioner off prior to turning the car off the fan runs for a short time 5-10 minutes and will then turn off .
I have pulled the relay and it will also kill the fan.
Thank you for you assistance
Bill
