Personal opinions on the 82 944
HEY ALL JUST INTRODUCING MY SELF & want to see what you might know and
think of the 82 944 i think its the most sexy looking 944 ive ever seen and there was only 3921 made would this make the car more rare then most aspecialy since it was the first of its kind? my 82 944 is alpine white with black leather trim interior and its in beautiful condition body wise anyway the engine and electricals im not so sure its had a few little strange things going on since i got it a week ago I SWEAR ITS ALIVE i will try and get some pics up as soon as i can |
New Engine or not New engine?
would it be wrong for me to place a later model porsche engine in my 82 944
for example a 2.5 out of a 944 / turbo or a engine from a 968 even??? or would it be best to just recondition the engine ive got now which i belive was built by vw (4 wwo and vw symbol are on the main block) other then that it looks the same as any other 944 porsche engine except the rocker cover has some german written on it (that just says firing order) and not the classic porsche cover if anyone knows about these engines please fill me in i have lots to learn the main reason for wanting a later model engine is that I NEED DME and setup a Haltech or microtech sys to a lcd screen so i can play with my air / fuel mixture & so on |

Yeah that is a pretty rare car. It had to be specially imported into this country. The engine is actually supposed to be stronger than the later models (up till 1989). I'd keep it as stock as you can. You may run into emissions problems with it though. It is probably too new to get grandfathered in (in California 1976 is the last exempted year). The car was supposed to have a much less restricted engine as it was intended for european markets only.

Nice.... ive come to realise that this car needs all the respect i can give it and i will try my best to get it to look as new as the day it was made the best i can im amazed how nice it looks since ive been cleaning her up BLING BLING she shines now.
The Engine i will have it reconditioned. Maybe a lil work like a port polish ect but i wonder could i still get a comp hooked up to it or will that jet flow system have to go to do that since that basical does the same thing manualy. umm... hey question that ponders the mind now you think i could find a rocker cover that fits with the classic Porsche name on it that would set it off that and few shinny fittings I LOVE MY 944 MAN ITS OFF THE CHARTS I WILL KEEP THIS CAR FOREVER |

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I do not think that car of yours is a 1982 944. From your description of the valve cover on the motor, and from looking at the pics (and from what I know about 944's)...........................it is obviously a 924 that has had an aftermarket body kit installed on it. Take a look at the round gas cap opening and the door handles.
Could you give us the vin#? How about a good pic underneath the hood? |

I'm with Jeremy on this one, I'm thinking 924 as well. One of the pics show a wheel, and I can't quite tell, but it looks like it has four lug nuts, not five. A picture of the engine should clear this up, if you want to post it.
There's nothing at all wrong with a 924, by the way. They can handle all of the suspension mods that any of the later cars can, and if you break a timing belt, you won't ruin your valves like the 944's do. Regards, |

hmmm.. some what upseting to hear trust me on this but a very good point i guess i will look into it (I WANNA CRY NOW) but could be that the 82 just came this way since i noticed there is alot of diffrences to the 83 or any other model it looks the same as the gtp Boss 944 thoe right down to that round fuel cap minus the body kit and the fact the gtp boss had fixed lights on it so i will check into it

yeah the vin starts with 924 which i can only guess what this means thanx for showing me the light thoe atleast i feel more free to not leave it stock anymore |

I just looked at your pictures for the first time. The gas cap and the general poor fit of the chin spoiler are a giveaway. sorry for getting your hopes up. All 82 porsche 944s have slightly different front and rear bumpers from any US model 944. There are also small rectangular side marker lights. These "Euro style" bits are different on cars that have to meet US regulations. The car has the same gas cap as any 944. As far as I know there was no "boxed rockers" option for the 82 944.
After I saw your pictures I asked one of the guys at a salvage yard I go to about your engine and they said that a a glance the 82 engine looks about like any other 944. |
