I replaced the plastic bushing for the shifter in my 88 944, and it helped some of the sloppiness. It's pretty easy to replace. The shifter has a ball joint that fits into the plastic bushing, and the plastic bushing is mounted to the frame - the shifter ball goes into the bushing and "stands" on it. It didn't clean up the sloppiness completely in my shifter, however. The shift linkage from the transaxle up to the shifter is probably sloppy in the bushing that it connects to, but there's no replacement sleeve or anything for the bushing. I've thought about finding a way to put in a brass sleeve or something to help with it, but I think I'm going to put in a short shift kit instead, and that will hopefully take care of the rest of the sloppiness.

Replace the shifter bushing that was previously talked about, and the shift lever itself. The pin that connects the lever to the rod will wear down, into the shape of an hourglass, and will cause side to side slop. They were never extremely tight to start with, but those 2 should help.

excellent, I will try that is there anywhere online to buy these or autozone just as good. Thanks for the replies. I love this car I am selling a Ford Lightning to get this car back on her feet. I also have a problem with clutch sitting on the floor board and it looks like the front seal is leaking... thought about replacing the timing belt and such while I am there. Once again thanks
