tell me more about the 944 turbo // new user
hi all
I'm 26 years and live in Gent, Belgium
After cruisin' around in my Opel GSi I decided its time for a car with real wheel traction.
I always thought about an e46 328i touring from bmw but after browsing the net I adore the 944 turbo (a friend of my father has one also so that may explain my choice)
Now my question is: whats a good price for a 944 turbo in good condition and will I be able to afford the maitainance?
Also are there enough spare parts left or is the price already too high? And whats the fuel consumption?
Greetings!

I don't know what prices run in Germany, but I will give you a quick run down in the states for comparison.
A well maintained, average mile (100k miles say) 1986-1988 944 turbo will run you anywhere from 5k-10k depending on overall condition. The Turbo S (1988, and 1989---though the S designation was dropped in 89), used a larger turbo (K26/8) and produced about 247hp. The 86-88 (non S) used the K26/6 turbos which were rated at 217hp. You can plan on roughly $1000 USD in maintenance per year, doing most of the work yourself, though this can drastically explode sometimes. These cars can bury you very quickly financially.
Let me give you an example. We did a clutch job on a friends 1986 turbo on saturday. Book time 18 hours. If I was to charge him what I would at my shop, he would have been looking at $1800 in labor, and $700 in parts. During the exhaust removal, one of his studs was broke, so we had to pull the turbo to drill and replace the stud (13 hour book time). Once the clutch was apart, his pilot bearing was seized, which in turn ate the end of the torque tube (driveshaft), which required replacement. Another 8 hours of labor to drop the rear suspension and pull the torque tube and replace it with a used unit ($300, but new would have been about $3k). Late saturday night we finished the car. With 3 of us working, we did 40 hours of book labor time ($4,000), in 12 hours. So add the total up if a shop were doing the work:
Clutch Parts: $700
Clutch Labor: $1800
Torque Tube Used: $300
Torque Tube Labor: $800
Turbo removal for stud repair: $1300
Total $4900 on a car that would bring about $7500.

thats too much than I can afford right now, such a cost would idd ruin me atm [&o]
so back with my feets on the ground
later
::edit:: I just took a look again at the advertisement ... its a Porsche 944 turbo targa
from 1986 with 146.000 km's ( almost 91250 miles) and the garantee in ONE year ... is that interesting or is that garantee a false argument to trick buyers? Or should I inform more about what the garantee stands for?
