Timing and Cam
Zorin,
The rebuilt head comes with all new valves and valve work done. The pistons have some marks, but, I am not going to mess with them. I should replace the water pump... but, with my budget right now... its gonna be a last minute call.

How is it going tarheel?
Be very carefull how you put your timing belt on. See what happened to my engine!
Make sure you follow the steps in http://www.connact.com/~kgross/FAQ/944faq08.htmlexactly.Specially the one about TDC minus 10 degrees.Unfortunately I found this site too late.
I am now deciding what to do. I can get a new engine for $2K but I am not sure how easy it is to put it on. I think the engine needes to be installed from underneath not from the top. Or I can just junk the car and get $500 for it!

Thanks for the warning Zorin.
I am sorry to see those pics... looks like you've sustained a lot of damage. The engine, I've heard can be installed from either way, however I do know that it is SIGNIFICANTLY easier to install from beneath. So, if you could get a lift for the car somehow...
If you're interested, you could try a 968 swap. There are related threads about such a swap on this forum, and also you can take a look at this site, http://www.944s3.com/.
It is probably a good amount of work, however, if you're in the water for a new motor anyway, why not make it a project?

Hey PorscheDoc,
I just recieved the head, and I am ready to put everything back together and put the timing belt on. However, because the engine was not at TDC when the camshaft was removed, so I now have to time the cam and the engine seperately. Bringing the engine to TDC will be no problem, but I am not sure how I am supposed to time the camshaft properly. Any advice at all would be appreciated!
Thanks

You set the engine at #1 TDC, then install the cam tower carefully onto the head, making sure the mark on the cam gear stays lined up with the mark on the back of the distributor housing. Slowly bolt the cam tower down, making sure your marks do not move.
this may be a silly question, but... alas, I am not exactly all-knowing.... anyways, should I put the head on the block before bringing the #1 piston to TDC, or can I do that before putting the head back on?
