Help!!!! I'll try to describe this as best I can. The drivers side half shaft seperated from the transmission. When I got under the car I could see that the ring of 6 bolts that connects the half shaft to the transmisison were all loose. Well 5 of them were and 1 was missing. I tried to put the bolts back in and only three of them would start in. I purchased 6 new bolts from the VW shop and went back under the car. 4 of the bolts can go back on with no problem. 1 of the holes has bad threads, and the 6th hole the bolt was sheered off.
The plate in the transmission, that the axel bolts to, needs to be removed and have the threads corrected on one hole and the sheered bolt removed from the other.
ANY SUGGESTIONS. I've ordered a Haynes manual, will that show me how to remove that "plate" or am I looking at removing the transmission?

Why can't you just re-tap the buggered hole with the plate in place? Actually I would run the tap through all of the holes to clean them up. There should be no reason to disassemble that. Get a good tap, and clean up the threads. The bolt that is broke off, should turn right out since there is no pressure on it with the axle removed, you just need to tap it out counterclockwise.

 

I do think I can tap out the buggered hole, it's the broken off bolt that I'm worried about. To use an easyout or reverse tap, will I not have to drill a pilot hole to start with? There is not enough room for a drill, and that is why I thought I would need to remove the transaxel drive (or whatever it's really called) from the transaxel. I hope I'm wrong.

If you can take a small flat blade screw driver and tap the broken bolt counterclockwise, it should turn right out. Like I said, once the tension is off the bolt, they spin freely in the carrier....that is unless someone crossthreaded one in, but I haven't ever seen that.
