Default convertible top lowering instructions

I just bought a 1998 Boxster with 32,000 miles on it. All the manuals came with the car. Nevertheless, there is one question I have that is not answered in the owner's manual. When putting the convertible top down, are you supposed to leave the main latch unlatched? Or, after unlatching the latch and lowering the top part way, are you supposed to relatch the latchso that the latch handle is in the closed position when the top fully retracts and goes into its stowed postion?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

I left it unlatched more than a few times and it doesnt seem to harm anything. Im not sure if its hitting anything when on rest position so I latch it before fully bringing the top to its down position.
