I put the down payment for the cayman s, i was sure about it when i ordered but i'm not sure now.
I think i might chicken out and get a 911, because i don't know whether all this hype is for nothing
and when they release the basic cayman (which could be as early as 2007) would that de-value the cayman s?
The standard cayman might just be seen as a hardtop boxter which is worth even less......
I don't know i might just be getting paranoid with anticipation.

It doesnt matter what model you buy new, the first owner eats a huge amount in depreciation in the first year. Best thing to do is buy a used low mileage car....as in under 5k miles, and you will save huge. We are building a 1000hp motor for a customer with a 2004 GT2, which new ran about $165-170k. He bought it used with 4500 miles on it for $107k, and it is absolutely gorgeous.

:D I think it's a great looking Porsche and according to what I have seen in the press, it goes as well as it looks!!!

When are they gonna make a replacement for the 968 or 928 though? (Don't say that the Panamera is the replacement, it's got 4 doors for a start!)[sm=chattypair.gif]

I really like the car. I thought they were already for sale but I guess I'm wrong there. The only thing that gets me is the rear of the car. I keep looking at it and one minute I'll like it and the next I won't. All the other aspects of the car look great though. It also seems like it should have more HP, is there a more powerful version than the S? Still a good looking car and hopefully it sells well too. I think if I had enough money to buy one I'd rather have a 911 Turbo model.

My only problem with the Cayman is the marketing B.S. They purposely made the Cayman slower than the 911 to protect sales of 911. That is just BS to me.

I have a 02 911 Turbo, and I would buy the Cayman now if it had 450hp - I actually think the mid-mounted engine makes the car better than the 911. But there is no substitute for brute force - and the Cayman don't have it. If they come out with a 3.8TT in it. I'm buying ...

Unless they spin the engine/gearbox around in the 911 and make that a mid-mounted! Lose the back seat and add a trunk like the Cayman. Now you're talking ...

I currently have a 2005 997 S Cabriolet. I am selling it next month. Today I ordered my Cayman S. Once I get done with my engine and exhaust tweeks, this car being a Mid-engine hard top is going to drive like an old Porsche 904. It is gonna ROCK. Just talk to all the Porsche car salemen that you know. Most of them have already driven the Cayman S. Hey, the fact that it beat the 911 on the track should tell you something. The suspension in this car has been reworked and only a GT3/GT2 or Carerra GT will handle the same. Maybe a 911 TT with its 4-wheel capability would match. But if you beef up the engine and intake/exhaust with a EMC Chip you will be set. This car has some really nice curves too. My friends that drove it on the track told me the sound is the best sounding Porsche that you can buy. Go ahead and do some more research before you knock this car and think it is just another Boxster. It is far from it.

I love the new Cayman though I will likely wait until it's two years old and pick up a low mileage one. Let someone else eat the initial depreciation.

I think it is a nifty car but wish Prosche had put the 3.8S engine and about 350-360 HP it it. Clearly the chassis can handle more power and of course that would make it the fastest Porsche (save the Carrera GT).

I think Porsche held back on the power only because they want the 911 Carrera to be their big dog, but I don't really see that the two models compete that much. I bought my Carrera new only 4 months ago knowing knowing that the Cayman was coming out. I wanted a car with a small backseat -- not to use for people but it makes the car a bit roomier on trips -- more of a GT and less of a sports car, and that what the 911 with its back seat, really is -- so why not just go with that? ((((And yes, my car is an '04, but it was new and I'm probably one of the few people on earth who went so far out of his way to find a 996 over a 997 - story for another day).

I have had my base Cayman for about a week and have put 800 miles on it. I am very satisfied with all aspects of the car. This is my first Porsche...I am a Mercedes convert....diesels for 30 years. You can imagine how the little 2.7 flat six compares with a 3 liter diesel. So I don't know what it's like to have TT's. My big question is how it will perform in the winter in upstate NY. I would like to drive it year round, with winter tires of course. The Porsche manual warns that you should thoroughly clean the engine and engine compartment after a winter to get rid of salt, etc. Apart from that, no cautions. I am aware that most Porsche owners take their cars off the road around here in the winter. Why? The Cayman's ground clearance is not really a problem and the mid-engine design should offer good winter handling. So, for sub 50k, why not enjoy it year round? Do any Boxster owners know of any real deal breakers/warnings on this issue?

Having driven the Cayman S back to back with the Carrera 4S there is one startling problem. I want the power of the 4S, but I want the 4S to handle like the Cayman! The handling is superb and we absolutely loved the car. The only thing was the nagging "I want another 100kw of power under the right foot" In a straight line the 4S obviously wins, but at the slightest hint of a corner, I think the Cayman S would reverse the tables. All in all a great driving car and my wife and I absolutely loved it. Not enough to give up the top down fun of the Boxster S, but it definately had a smile factor.

Pitbul - can you tell us more about the EMC Chip (where do you get it from, cost, issues with installation etc.) and the intake/exhaust modifications to which you referred. Same basic questions. You say it is the best sounding Porsche that you can buy - is that before or after your suggested modifications ?

I had a 2002 M3 w/ SMG trans. and i loved the car but sold it in anticipation for the new M3 coming out soon. Well I was convinced i was making the right choice until.....the Cayman S was revealed. The reviews were staggering, everyone loved this car. It looks awesome, the price is well, not so bad for a supercar marque, but I have to, to be fair to my conscience, compare it to the M3. 6 cyl w/ 333hp, 0-60 in 4.8 sec. and a starting price of $50k. The new M3 will be an 8cyl. car w/ 400hp., 0-60 in 4.5 and a starting price of approx. $53k. Now the Cayman S is 6 cyl. w/ 295 hp., 0-60 in 5.1 sec. and a starting price of $60k. Welcome to my conundrum, my heart moves at the thought of the Cayman, but my brain looks at the numbers and tells me the M3 is the obvious choice. How do you justify the $10k difference? All opinions are welcome to help all understand why the Porsche is a special car compared to it's fellow countrymen the BMW. thank you, and Good night and Good luck.
