993 vs 996

RE: 993 vs 996
Personally, I like both quite a bit. Some people prefer the look of the 993 --it lools and feels a bit more like a "classic" 911 and less like a Boxster. It is also about 4-5 inches shorter and an inch or so narrower than the 996, It has 3.6 liters and not a lot of power less than a 996.
I slightly prefer the 996, although I like the headlights and front fenders on the 993. The 996 not only has more HP but its actually about 70 lbs lighter than the 993 (at least according to the stats I'm looking at now). the real reason I have one, though, is that its new and under warranty and no hassle for that reason.

That's my opinion anyway! (I like them both, but it depends what you require from a car to choose which one's right for you!)

RE: 993 vs 996
It is a tough call. The 993 was a much improved, evolved version that could trace itself all the way back to the first 911 in 1963, although in truth so much had evolved over the years there was virtually nothing in common with the original.
But Porsche found it next to impossible to stay with that platform any more and be competitive and legal with all the side impact and emissions laws, etc.. Truth be told, the 996 is a bigger (but not heavier) car and at least in stock form faster, too. But it is a bit "softer" or smoother maybe, and does not have quite that intimate "911" feel of the 993.
I suggest trying a really good version of each and deciding: although they are both Porsches they are quite different.

RE: 993 vs 996
The 996 is slighty better built and has proven itself to be very relaiable. The 993 convertible has alot of flexure compared to the 996. The 996 convertible top is very easy to put down with an automatic mode. The 993 is old school.
I like the 993 appeareance as much maybe more than the 996. the Hp on the 993 is 10 hp less, not even noticeable. Both car handle pretty much the same. Porsche must have go alot of consumer feedback about the 993 appearance because the 997 looks more like the 993.
Both a great cars. I chose a 996. You may feel different and you would not be wrong either way.
Good luck,
Lee
