Pre-purchase inspection cost?

How much should I plan to spend for a 996 pre-purchase inspection? Should I go to a dealer, or to an independent mechanic? Thanks for any advice.

Depends on the shop. I charge $150 for a comprehensive PPI with written report and pictures, and $300 (total) for the same PPI with compression and leakdown tests performed on the engine.
