Default should I buy 911 or 928?

Hi everyone,
So, I am in the market for a used sports car, and have long been set on a 928. However, I recently realized that there are in fact plenty of 911's in the same price range (I'm looking between $5,000-10,000). Now, I am stuck trying to decide between these two beautiful cars! I have plenty of time to figure it out, but I feel I need some knowledgeable outside input . I have never owned nor had experience with porsches, much less one of these particular vehicles, so I really know nothing beyond what I've gained from my research. First, I would just like to get some people's general impressions and opinions regarding these two cars; performance, comfort, practicality, and anything else one might have to say about them. There is one area though in which I need specific input; which of these vehicles is going to be more expensive and/or difficult to mantain? This is really the deciding factor for me, because I am not going to have deep, deep pockets. I know that any porsche demands a willingness to dish out the cash, so all my money will go towards the car if need be. However, I'm quite young, and don't have a high paying job, so all of my money is still not a lot. So, if anyone with some experience could please tell me how the 928 and the 911 compare in terms of cost, as well as in the other areas I mentioned, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Well, from my perspective it is a no-brainer. The 911 line from 1964 on has always been the Porsche. With exceptions of a few models they are relatively easy to work on and parts are plentiful -- etc.

928s are nice, but not the Porsche, and they areamong the more difficult cars to service and repair -- something to think about when you are buying a car both that old and in that price range.

928 was meant as a true GT (grand touring) car. Porsche's version of a "Cadillac". The 911 is a totally different car, much simpler too. Smaller andlighter, they really can't be compared to each other. The 928 is loaded with little gizmos, gadgets and technology of that particular model year. Which after a few years, starts to rot, crack and fall apart. You need to almost be a rocket scientist to figure the stuff out,or get the 7 volume encyclopedia set for the car (CD ROM available for $35).

You willget soaked for maintenance and repairs on either one if you are not capable to do the work yourself. They'll see an old Porsche and $$$ signs show up in their eyes. Happens every time.

I started with a 79 928 at a younger age. I still have it, and probably will never sell it. I also have an 03 996 cabriolet as a daily driver, and still won't sell my 928. Something about that German V8.I love them both, very different cars. You can pick up a decent 928 for very cheap because they aren't sought after as much. Mainly because people don't thinkit's a "real" Porsche, although they really have no clue and probably have never even driven one in good condition. The cars really shouldn't be compared to each other. It's like comparing a Caddilac Escalade toa Corvette Z06, totally different objectives, right from the start of design.

I recommend driving both, that is the only way to find out what you're going to want andlove. Take the time, if the seller knows you're serious, he (or she?) will let you take it for a ride.

No question, if you drive a 928 down the street people can mistake it for a mazda rx7, if you drive a 911 down the street you can not mistake it for anything but want it is, a real porsche.
