Default Oil Level Sending Unit question

I am powder coating the oil tank off a 74 911 and had a question on the level indicator. I was heating it up and noticed the plastic ring around the spade fitting on the cap started to melt so I pulled the mechanism out of the tank. I noticed how it works by the arm resting against a flat piece of metal inside when it is full and on another piece when it gets low. The second spade bolts to one of the 5 studs on the tank, this one being a ground I assume that connects the crcuit when in the full or empty position. I assume the plastic is there only to keep the 2 sspades from connecting outside the tank and probably wont harm anything if its not there as long as care is taken to make sure the 2 spade connectors dont touch. Can someone back me up on this. I would prefer not to paint the cap and coat it to match the tank. I dont see anything else the heat can harm.
