New member says hi, introduces car(s)
Hello, I've just aquired (in the last month) 2 Porsches a 1987 924S and an '88 944 for parts. Looking to fix up the 924S to a 13.5 quarter, improve the reliablity, and improve the exteror/interior to modern standards... And then some.
I have a wealth of knowledge on car stereo but unfortunately have little know how about Porsche's. I would never have touched one of these under normal circumstances (my next project car was to be a '98 Police Package Crown Vic) but luck has it that I got them pretty cheap and the little buggers grew on me quick.
The 924S needs numerous common parts to be replaced, and is schedued this thursday to get the oil leak repaired (how lucky I am to have an experienced porsche mechanic in my backyard, essentially!), other than that it has a very tight 5'spd tranny and a newly rebuilt motor.
I am planning to do an extensive audio setup (All Adire, PPI, and possibly JL equipment), and maybe doing a modest, sleek body kit, with enough mods to make her go- and go for a long time without falling apart. The 924 is white and am planning to eventually make it ice pearl white.

Not to burst your bubble here, but i dont think you will ever see a 13.5 quarter out of a 924S unless you drop a V8 in it. The 944 turbo (stock) runs a 14.6 quarter mile, and with a few thousand dollars in mods (chips, exhaust, maf, etc), you can get them into the 13's....thats with a turbo. The 924S caries the same 2.5 motor as the 944 NA (and the turbo, minus the turbo of course), most minivans will take an 944 or 924 off the line light to light i am afraid. Also, there is hardly anything you can do to the motor performance wise, they are already built pretty stout. Only option i know of for running that number would possibly be to supercharge it (speed force racing), but even then, i dont think the horsepower gain is enough to run that quick. The 924 and 944 were made for cornering, not straight line speed. Hope this helps.
Yes, it actually does, not much of a drag racing junkie here, 13.5 seemed respectable (Pshht! n00bs I tell ya), just rather have it "fast enough" to take a rice rocket out once in awhile. I'm sure the supercharger costs a good plenty as well, might come later... Not concerned with speed so much I guess, more that the thing doesn't break if I happen to utilize the speed. My heavy foot got worn down on my first Crown Vic, so I don't drive that fast anymore. THis car will not get thrashed.
Mostly looking for a car I can drive anywhere (Across the US for example) that not too many people have that will turn heads and will last me alot of summers.
I do like the 40 mpg that mine was getting from Indianapolis to Champaign, Illinois on Highway 74- not bad a all.
So yes, thnk you for the reality check there, LOL!

While the 944/924 isnt the fastest car out there by any means, the make up for it in the corners, where it will outcorner most cars. I use to think mustang GT's cornered pretty good. After driving a 944T, i realized that the mustangs are death wagons in the corners. Go out, find a nice curvey road, and you will really enjoy the car. As far as breaking, get all the maintenance stuff in order, and the motor will last a long time, they are very strong like that. Problem is with the 20 year old wiring, hoses, belts, etc that tend to wear out. On my 944 turbo, it has 165k miles, never been rebuilt, and i run 15psi boost (i think about 11psi is stock), and it is holding up just fine, and trust me, i make the car work for me. As long as the timing belt is good (if it has not been done recently, do it, because if it goes which is known to happen on these cars a lot, the valves get smashed, and the repair bill is very hefty), clutch is good, etc, the car should be fine. With nice paint, interior, stereo, the car will get a lot of looks.
Thanks for your advice- once I get all of the obvious bugs worked out and the belt checked, I will get to actually drive it- I can't wait- a bad wheel bearing and the oil leak has it pretty much hobbled right now.
I'll make sure I post extensive pictures of the audio install- It will definitely be a challenge making it ultra light- my current setup weighs close to 300lbs in my daily driver lol!
