How much is a locked up 944 engine worth?
I have a 2.5L engine out of a '87 944 that the crankcase is locked up on. I don't know why it's locked up, I just pulled off the oil pan and couldn't see anything obvious. Can anybody tell me how much this engine would be worth?
Thank you!
Thank you!
Somebody might need a good boat anchor and give you $50. Seriously, until you know what is wrong with it it is essentially worthless. It could be the rings and rusted to the cylinder walls, or most likely something in the cam timing (chain, etc.) is jammed - but until you know if and roughly how much it would cost to fix it, don't count on even being able to talk someone into taking it away at no charge.
Hi Lee Willis is right. Why not pull out the plugs and put some uppercylinder libricant down the bores and leave it to soak for a few days. Then try to get it to move by turning the crankshaft using a socket and wrench. If you can get it to move this is the clue to why and how much it might be worth.

I actually have tried removing the plugs and pouring in some lubricant and after that the crank was still stuck. I know the cam is not siezed because I have removed the belts and it spins freely as well as the balance shafts and water pump. I tried turning the crank with all the belts removed and even tried loosening the main bearing caps and still no movement. Maybe this information could help.

I would be tempted to have one more go with either paraffin or a pure penetrating oil and just fill the bores up and leave it for a week to soak, then try again.
Otherwise Hot911TT probably has given you an estimate of value.

Take the aluminum block to a scrap yard, it is worth more per lb of aluminum, than selling it whole as a locked up unit. A good running 944 (non turbo) engine is worth about 500.
Lol, i just read that you had removed the belts and know the cam isn't locked.....uh it is an interference engine. If you turn the cam, and the crank doesn't turn in series, then you have bend the valves in the head. If you are planning to sell the engine, then I hope you didn't turn the cam more than a few degrees.
