Hello peoples.

Sorry to come right out of the gate seeking help, but, well, I need some help.

We have a '96 911 Carrera Convertible with ~76k miles on it. Body and interior are mint, new roof, it looks good. It's my wife's daily driver. It's been leaking oil and we had it in to the stealership, they replaced belts, hoses, yada yada, it's still leaking oil.

Now they say there are multiple leaks in the main seals, and that they need to pull the engine to fix it. And they want $7100 to do it.

-Is this somewhere in the ballpark of a reasonable amount of money for this job?

-Will the car ever be the same? (hard to answer I realize, but what's your impression?)

-Is it even worth doing or should we just sell it?

The wife loves the car, she doesn't want anything else but 7100 is a lot of dollar bills.

Did they tell you which seals are leaking? For that kind of money, it sounds like a cylinder gasket must be leaking, which would be a pretty close ballpark to that number.

 

My wife actually spoke to them in person, all I have is the repair ticket which reads: "Tech performed diagnostics, found multiple engine seal leaks. Recommend engine reseal."

So I'm not sure exactly which gaskets/seals are involved.

If they are doing an entire reseal, then that is about right dollar wise. If you do it, I would spend the extra money and make sure the bearings get done as well.

 

Thanks for the reassurance, Doc. Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly do you mean by "getting the bearings done" ?

 

Why not ask for a warranty on the work, too? If they are confident that they have diagnosed the problem, and can fix it, for that type of money you should get a "no oil leak" warranty for one year, etc.

I'd get a second opinion.

One engine oil leak can go a long way - meaning that one small leak that's been unnoticed might easily give the appearance that there are numerous large leaks. If you contract with a dealer to do a 'reseal' job you are opening the door for them to steal you blind.

Suppose your leak is simply the oil drain plug, for example. Wind and road grime have combined to make an awful mess that seems to have come from anywhere. Your dealer spots this, gets you to sign for a thorough reseal, pressure washes your engine and fixes the small leak, charging you the $7100. for replacing a $1.00 part in 20 minutes total of labor. They might even charge you for an oil change.

You need to know more precisely the problem and not trust to much.

 

You haven't provided complete information till which part of the car is leaking and for how long ? Do you have it tested from expert?
