I just returned from the tire shop, disappointing news. What I thought was a small leak in the rear tire turned out to be a cracked rim.
I did not, repeat, not, run over anything, hit anything, jam a curb etc.

Has anyone else encountered this? Did you contact a Porsche Factroy rep? Is there a "structural" guarantee on the rims that anyone has seen. What should I pay for a new rim?

You have to ask yourself...did you own the car from new ??? did someone else maybe hit the rim (previous owner ??)...is the rim out of round ?? I have run a tyre business in the past and usually the rim has been impacted at some stage in the cars life. The problem is sometimes you can not even see an impact mark because it may have been impacted heavily in the middle of the tyre but the rim usually has a slight buckle. Given your vehicle is 10 years old I dont think Porsche would do anything to help given all the circumstances and the warranty is only 2 years...good luck.

 

If you had the car from new, you could try to talk with the dealer, although I would not expect anything: the car has been on the road about ten years.

If not, then I would suspect that the wheel was hit or damaged somehow in the past. I'd try to find a good (guarranteed) replacement wheel from a surplus yard before buying new.

If you have not owned the car for long, I'd also have someone really look over the suspension and etc. where that wheel was: a shock hard enough to crack a wheel can also loosen or damage other things.
