Hello,

I have a 2004 911 Cab that I need new tires for. I was looking for a high quality/performance alternative to the OEM 285/30 ZR18 Pirelli's that I currently have. Someone suggested the Sumitomo tires. Does anyone have any experience with these, or could you tell me some alternate brands that are comparable to the Pirelli's, but a little cheaper?

I'd look at the Michelin Pilot Sport 2's.

They are very good tires. Soft enough to grab but hard enough to wear. Pilelli's are usually an 80 wear index but the Michelins are 220 wear index.

I have Continental Sport Contact 2's on one car but not as fond of them as I am of the Michelin. The Continentals are noiser than the Michelin and ride a bit harder.

I have a freind that ownes a tire store. He has convinced me that the Michelin are the best. My tires were Continentals and he showed me how out of round those tires are ( about 1/8 of an inch). I had always bought Goodyear as my first replacement tires. They are all over the map as far as out of roundess. but always bad.

His words to me where " I am not thrilled with France as a country but they do make good tires".

I have had the oportunity to drive two 2004 C2s with two day's of each other, one with Continentals and one with Michelin Pilots. Big difference. The contenentals we not as smooth, and very noisy compared to the much better performance of the Pilots. Spend the extra money and get the Michelins, you won't regret it. - Simon

I thought the continental had a wear rating of 280. If you say the michelens are 220 then they will wear quicker than the continentals. I have a 997 2005 and use contiental sport 2. I do 28k a year so got around 17k on the first set.

Does anyone know of a better wearing rear set. (mine are 19" wheels)

i've had the pilots on for a year now (about 8K miles) and they are holding up great. i'm pretty tame most of the time but run my 03 996 into the hills against my buddies 02 on the weekends and these tires hold the road very well.

about $1400 for a set all the way around on 18" wheels.
