Hello all, newbie here. I have been shopping for an E-46 M3 for a while now, and have just come across a 99' 911. It is silver with black interior. Asking price is $30,000.00 It has 42,000 miles on it and really is in great condition. This price just seems rather low to me. Were there many problems with this year model, as I know it was the first water cooled engine for the 911. All inputs would be greatly appreciated.

 

Prices are low due to overproduction...supply and demand. The cars are very dependable.

 

Thanks for the input. I like to think of myself as pretty mechanically inclined. How easy would DIY maintenace be? I have a lift and nearly unlimitted access to all kinds of tools. Im not talking about a complete engine rebuild here, just things like replacing a clutch if I have to, spark plugs, fuel injectors, normal wear and tear items.

 

Clutch is a very extensive job, porsche says you have to drop the motor to do so, with the tranny attached (If you are familiar with older 911's, you know they come out together in a motor drop), but we do it with the engine in the car, though it is done by feel mostly, as you can't really see much up there, and isn't much fun...but it saves time. Oil changes and the such of course are easy to do, spark plugs are easy on the NA motors, on the Twin Turbo motors, requires removal of the rear bumper cover, intercoolers, etc. I think plugs on a TT are listed as about 7 hours, i did them in about 3 on friday....NA's are easy though. For the most part they are fairly easy to work on, though anything too in depth requires either a partial motor drop or a full motor drop, but other than doing a clutch or motor rebuild, it really shouldnt need anything that extensive. We are replacing a lot of clutches around 50k miles if the cars have been driven hard, so keep that in mind. I think porsche lists a clutch job at around 20 hours. Having a lift and good tools really helps. Other than the plugs and oil changes etc, i can't really think of anything tough that is done on a regular basis. Of course get a PPI done at a qualified porsche garage, and make sure then engine has no oil leaks, etc.

 

Thanks very much! You seem to be in the know on these cars. I do believe I'm gonna make the switch (BMW-Porsche). I love the power of ///M, but I've been there done that. I do not plan to mod the car at all except for maybe an aftermarket exhaust, but this would be simply for sound reasons, not performance.
