Default 996 - performance upgrade

I just bought a 2004 Carrera 4S and saw that Porsche offers a performance upgrade that increases the HP from 320 to 345. It is called the Carrera Power Kit.
The Porsche web site doesn't offer any more technical info about it. Does anyone know the performance changes?
I am sure there are aftermarket thisd party upgrades that offer more performance and probably less expensive. This one is about $13,000. I don't know if I want to void the warranty yet.
Thank you,
Mark

I pull this from the Porsche website. I have it in my 2003 996 C4. I ordered it from the factory when I bought the car.
I believe it really adds a lot instantaneous response. It was worth the money.

Carrera Powerkit
The Carrera Powerkit offers an increase in power output from 320 to 345 hp on 911 Carrera models since model year 02 (08/01). Modifications include a new alloy induction manifold, cylinder heads, exhaust manifolds and camshafts, as well as revised engine management software. With more power on board, there is even more enjoyment from your Porsche. Additional parts may be required depending on production date and model. Please consult your local Porsche dealer.
911 Carrera models from 08/01 (manual gearbox only).

Do you think that the Prosche powerkit upgarde will work with the Tiptronic gear box as well?
I have a 2004 4S Tip and would like to upagrde it with out losing my warranty.

I thought the 4S had 355 HP. I just bought a new 2004 Carrera (no idea why it sat all that time at the dealer) and was looking at the same package. It seems like a lot of money for little gain in performance.

I would recommend not making any modifications, though. That's why I bought mine Porsche.

I have a 2002 corevette ZO6 which I made too extreme, a stepo at a time, by going down that road. It started down the modification route only a week after I bought it. Now, three and a half years later, I've spent more on mods than the car cost. I have a glorious car that dynos tests with 600+ HP at the rear wheels, looks exotic (and drives that way, does the quarter mile in 10.2 seconds and is still very streetable. Great for cruising on Saturday night. But it is just too extreme, and as a daily driver, I just "screwed it up. I bought the Prosche so I could enjoy something sporty driving every day.

All my experience taught me that real, verifiable-by-dyno-test horsepower costs $85 per HP (for Corvettes, etc. I would expect the cost to be a bit higher on Porsches since everything else is). But the S package is close to $700 per HP. Seems way to high.

I think the modification route is a mistake unless you intend the car to stay forever in the "toy" category.

Hi Lee
Thanks for your answer. I can get a 30HP gain for about $3,000. That’s about $100 per HP and it involves a computer upgrade, air filter and a modified catalytic converters. It should bring the power to 355 for a 3.6 engine.
I think of it as a small upgrade, and I hope it does not hurt the car. I am using a company in Germany names 9FF, which is also producing the fastest Porsche in the world (800HP). I sure hope they know what they are doing….

Yeah, that sounds a lot better. the price seems reasonable and if they can go to 800 HP (even if, no doubt, it is for a lot more money), it gives you confidence that they known how to do it reliability so you don't mess up the car.

Good...so I will do it and let you know how it works.
I think the 30HP may make the car quit faster.

Consider some US tuners that have a lot of background with these cars. With the proper airbox and tuning real gains are possible and far cheaper then the 6K the factory gets for the X51 package. There are also options that allow you to switch into stock mode which will leave the dealer uninformed that the car has been modified. These systems are far and few in the industry. They work and are well worth the cost, apx 2300 for such programs.
