Advice on 911 soon to be purchased!!!!
Hi all,
I need advice. Within the next month, i want to be a 911 owner but i have questions.
I'm pretty set on the 996 but there are a few things that i'm not sure on.
1. Does the Carrera 2 come in a cabriolet model?
2. Are the hoods on all the convertables power?
3. How heavy is a hard top?
4. I'm hearing bad info on reliability and build compared to older models. Is it as bad as what people say or is it just a small number of people with load voices?
5. Are the Carrera 4's much slower than the Carrera 2's?
6. Are the Carrera 2's that much more fun to drive?
If any of you guys are happy to chat over the phone with advice, let me know and i'll send my number.
Hope someone can help and thanks in advance

RE: Advice on 911 soon to be purchased!!!!
Salaam Mansoor999,
I think the 997 or 995 model of the 911 is the better way to go.
Frankly, the 996 looks like the cheaper Boxter from the front.
Why spend so much and be confused for a lesser car? If you
going for a non turbo model, I would save up for a S model
giving you more performance.
Best Regards,
Michael

I think the model year is a personal preference and if you ask 10 people which model they would choose, you might get 10 different answers. I purchased a 2002 911 Carrera Cabriolet (only 35k miles in pristine condition)from a coworker and couldn't be happier. I was initially going to get an '06Boxster S with 10k miles, but coiuldn't pass up on my dream car. I'm not into racing or modifying, just into pure driving pleasure. Let me know what you decide to do [sm=smiley20.gif]

RE: Advice on 911 soon to be purchased!!!!
I just traded in my 1999 911 CAB for a new 911 CAB.
My 1999 car which i got in 1998 was perfect for the 8-9 years I owned the car. You cannot go wrong whatever you buy. I would recommend the 2002 911 or newer. it has the more powerful engine.
If you can afford it the 997 variant which started in 2005 drives a little better and is more refined. The 993's while desireable for collectors in my view are dated especially if you want a convertible.
You can't go wrong no matter what you buy. The thing I like about Porsche is the cars even years later withalot of miles on the clock still feel fresh. My 8 year old 911 still felt like it was a new car. my freind has a 1987 911 with over 200,000 miles and it is still rewarding to drive. These cars of course are dated compared to new technology. So buy as new as you can. These cars are very well engineered and built to last.
Good luck to you.

Is the perception that the 996 is luxury version of the boxster? I have seen some 993s selling for early 996s. I personally agree with the other poster who said the 993 seems a little dated (mostly on the inside).

RE: Advice on 911 soon to be purchased!!!!
I have a 01 996 Cab C4. I have had a 930 and a 86 Carrera Cab. My 996 is by far the nicest. This car is immaculate and I enjoy driving it. I want more power so I am putting a Super Charger on it. Stock the car handles great. I will put PSS9's on it and lower it next. My top is all electric which I am sure all 996's will be. The hard top is not heavy but I think a pain to store. I think the C4 is like 2 mph slower than the 2. I would take the4 wheel drive anyday over the two. They are all nice so buy what you want.

Lee, if you don't mind telling, how much were you able to sell your 1999 911 for?

As I have said before I loved the car and it treated me well and never gave a minute of trouble. In the market they are a good deal in my view. An important point is there is always a market for used 911's, especially one that are low cost and handle like a modern car. The 1999-2001 911's are a great buy.
