Need to know if replacement of the crankshaft pulley for 1978 911 SC necessitates dropping the motor, or if there is a special tool to get the pulley off and back on...

I have a badly worn crankshaft pulley and keyway. (makes noise at low idle) I know this is really the issue after many test/inspections.

 

You have to do a partial drop (rear motor mount bolts only), then lower it with a jack. Remove your rear tin piece, the AC and AC mounting bracket, and the motor mount brack assembly from the engine. Then you can get to the pulley and replace it. It will be a couple hour job.

 

So let me see if I have this correct:

1. Remove Fan belt and other belts...
2. (do I need to remove the muffler?)
3. Support the car with jackstands (higher) supported by Torsion Bar Tube Covers
4. Support the engine with jack
5. remove large engine mount bolts (2)
6. lower engine so access to pulley is possible, removing all tin and bolted on assemblies
7. remove and replace the pulley, bolt and key... (does this require locking the crank in place?) How much effort is required? [:@]
8. reverse steps... 6 through 1... checking tightness along the way.
9. Get Beer.
10. Get more Beer

Is that about right? Any steps not there?

 

You probably will have to remove the muffler as well, I haven't done one on an SC in a long time, on the 930's we have to drop the muffler, but it is also different. I would have to go look at one to double check.

I have always popped crank bolt loose with an impact.

 

So... I guess the crankshaft pulley is normal thread? RIGHT=TIGHT? (CW)

I guess all I need is a new pulley, keyway, spring washer and bolt. (looks like I'll be hit up for about $300 bones)

Any other things I should do that are inexpensive along with this job? (will I gain access to the rear of the engine?) should I replace any parts while I have the engine down?

What comes to mind is the oil pressure sending unit. (isn't that the one that sometimes leaks?
