Default Front Hood struts

I've searched the site and can't find any related posts, so does anyone know the trick (or tricks) used to replace the drivers side piston/shock/strut (which keeps the front hood open) on a 1980 911 Targa??? The passenger side was a snap, but the drivers side is blocked by the fuel filler tube. There is no way (that I can see) of getting to the lower locking pin. And using only one piston (on the passenger side) twists the hood off line. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Mike

I actually didn't even put the bottom pin back in and it still works fine.
The area as you say is so tight it holds itself. I have another issue. The
engine deck on my 83 only has one strut. I have put electirc cooling
fans on the underside of whale tail and now it's to heavy. Was going
to see if there is a way to extend pin to mount double strut.
