Default low oil pressure

My 1968 911's crankcase is full of oil, but the oil tank is apparently empty (no reading on the dipstick, even after adding a couple of quarts). The oil pressure (cold) indicates 5-10 psi (it read 80-100 a few days ago); the green warning light goes out immediately on start-up. What do you think the problem is?

I would start with an oil change. Drain the case, drain the tank, and see what the oil looks like. Then a new filter and fill it back up. It should take 9-10 quarts of oil.

Default RE: low oil pressure

Thanks for your quick response. I considered changing the oil, but I'm concerned that since the engine recently "exploded" out the tail pipe when I cut the ignition at 1800 rpm, that there might be some mechanical problem that is causing the low oil pressure (i.e. perhaps stripped the splinesout ofthe oil pump drive shaft?). I'm looking for possible causes of the low oil pressure (5-10 psi cold) to investigate before I drain the oil in case I need to start the engine to test the other things. Thanks again
