Default performance chip upgrade

Hi-I just got a 2007 carrera 4 cabrio and was wondering if anybody knows anything about chips that increase horsepower. Reputable companies, prices, and how much increase will I get? New porsche owner and would appreciate anybody's feedback. Thanks -Barry

Hi Barry,

We looked at many different companies when deciding whose ecu programming to use in our business. We came to the conclusion that GIAC offered the most reliable software on the market. They tune through true motronic code just like the factory, unlike some of the other chip manufacturers out there. Everything is flashed through the OBDII port on the car, there is no chip soldering on the ECU (that is old technology). On the 997's, we couple the ECU flash with a cold air intake, and it makes roughly 22hp and 18tq, which isn't bad for a naturally aspirated porsche. Headers, mufflers, and highflow cats will give you another 15hp, and then you are about to the maximum level you will get out of the car, short of supercharging it.

PorscheDoc - I just checked out your website. Very impressive stuff you guys are doing. I noticed you don't have any tuning options for normally aspirated 996 models....any particular reason why?

Argh! Thanks for pointing that out. We did some website work and must have accidently deleted that menu! Will try and get it back up ASAP, lol. We do have stuff for the 996, quite a bit.

Upsolute has had some tuning issues in the past. They used a poor programming method, and shoved it out on the market. They claim to have changed this now, but I haven't seen it personally. When it comes to chip tuning, you get what you pay for. I have flashed over the top of a lot of upsolute programs in the past when installing GIAC, lol.

This may be a stupid question, but I have to ask - what does a performance chip do for you, exactly?

I mean, it seems to me that Porsche would program their car's logic to provide the optimal balance of performance vs efficiency vs reliability - I can't see them "crippling" their cars in anyway.. so what is it the performance tuning guys can do that Porsche couldn't? And what are the trade-offs/downsides... decrease fuel economy, longevity?
