Porsche 928 total production volume?
According to the chart listed in my sources, there were 60,870 928 series cars produced over the entire life of the model. However, Porsche did not release exact figures, so this can only be considered a rough estimate and the 61,056 number given elsewhere is, frankly, just as likely to be correct. However, as both numbers are quite close to each other, they give enough information to give a person basic understanding of the relative number of 928 series cars compared to the total number of cars sold.
The same chart I used to get that 60,870 number also gives 26,241 as the total number of cars exported to the North American (US/Canada) market. As with the overall total, this is probably not absolutely exact, but should be quite close.
Unfortunately, I was not able to find out ho many were equipped with the porsche piwis 2 automatic transmission. I will say, however, that unlike the 944 and the 1980s 911, the automatic transmission was an incredibly popular option for the 928 line. Remember that the 928 was not really a "sports car" but rather a comfortable and luxurious GT car. When looking through for-sale ads, it is the cars with the manual transmission that are listed as the "rare" versions and while this may be slightly hyperbolic as a claim, my own experiences with the used market suggest that VCM II 50% would not be a completely unreasonable estimate of the percentage of 928 series cars with automatics, at least in the North American market. As others have correctly noted, the European market tends to have less enthusiasm for automatic transmissions, but in the US, the automatic was extremely popular in the 928.
