Hello all! I recently purchased a 944 for club racing and was beginning to do a few modifications. Can anyone tell me if the manual steering crank bolt is different from the power steering crank bolt? With the change to manual steering, can I remove the power steering pulley? Any advise is appreciated.

You can use the existing bolt just fine, I run manual steering in my track car as well without the PS pulley.

So I have a related problem. Can anybody tell me why the crankshaft pulley for the powersteering wobbles. Mine just developed a bad wobble that through a mounting bolt on the power steering pump causing the belt to come off. Actually I'm not sure if the bolt on the pump caused the wobble or vice versa. The Pulley for the AC and alternator seems fine. How is it possible for the PS pulley to wobble without the AC/Alt pulley not wobbling. What would be the cause, and what do I need to do to fix it. Is the care OK to drive without the PS belt, or when you are talking about Manual steering is that a different conversion?

Manual steering is a completely different rack than the PS rack.

Have you had your crank pulley off at all recently? If the pulley is removed and reinstalled, but not sitting centered around the crank, it will be crooked when the bolt is tight. Not sure how else it would bend.

Yep that seems possible here. So with the car on the ground would I need a flywheel lock or can I just remove that nut holding the pulley on, replace the pulley and then retighten? What is the torque spec on that bolt? Is there anything else I need to watch for if I do this.

Can temporarily safely drive the car without the PS/ belt?

So while were on the topic. If I descided to get a manual conversion about how much would that cost, and where is the best place to get one.

You will need the flywheel lock, or use a pryback on the ring gear teeth (not recommended) to get the front crank bolt out. It is torqued to 155ft/lbs, so it is extremely tight. It must be torqued to 155 when going back together, or you will not have oil pressure as the oil pump is driven off that end of the crank.

Manual conversion requires a manual rack from an 83 944 (will only be able to find used), manual tie rods, boots, intermediate shaft, etc. It will run about 500 plus an alignment by the time it is all said and done.

Ok, so I would still like to have an opinion on the effects of driving my car until I descide what to do, without the PS belt attached. Any lasting effects of this?

Also, any reccomendations on where to find that manual rack? Do you have a part number handy? I can find the boots and control arms for sale but not the rack. Is the conversion technically difficult at all? By the way my car is an 86 NA.

Well, I suppose I just need to descide if I'm buying a flywheel lock or waiting a little to just upgrade (or downgrade as it is lol).
