I just purchased an 83 944. The gentleman told me that he put a new rebuilt engine from a 87 car that was a 3.0L... This just does not sound right to me... I could have sworn
that the 3.0L was made available in 89.. I double checked the receipt for when this engine was dropped in and it does say it is from a 87 944. Was the only engine available for that time a 2.5l 16v?? thanks a lot guys!!

 

There were two engines available in 87, the 2.5L 8V (944) or the 2.5L 16V (944S). If you post a picture of the engine bay, I can tell you what engine is in it.

3.0L was not available until 1989 in the S2
