buying a 944s
Hey, Just sold off the old automatic merc and have realy decided the 944 has to be the next car for me. Ive done alot of reading up etc and theres one thing i cant figure out. Im looking at a 1988 944S which apparently has a 2.7 litre engine. From what i figure its either a 944S with a transplanted engine, or just a 944 2.7 rebadged, does anyone know if the 944S ever came with a 2.7 and also when viewing the car is there anything i can look for that will tell me exactly what the car is like a chassis number or something like that? Another question, did the 944 only come with a 2.7l in 89' and thus other years with this engine are transplants? which brings me to another question - are there alot of engine transplants going on in these cars?
Sorry if that seems rather confusing, im confused myself but hope to be a 944 owner soon. Just want to make sure its the right 944.
thanks

RE: buying a 944s
The S did not come with a 2.7L engine. The S came with a 2.5L engine with a DOHC 16V head, where as the turbo's and standard NA 944's came with a 2.5L engine with an 8 valve SOHC engine. 1989 was the exception. This year, the 944 came with a 2.7L 8V SOHC engine. It was a one year/one model only engine. The S was only produced in 87 and 88. The S2 came in 89 with a 3.0L engine with a DOHC 16valve engine.
My guess is he is confused about the size of his engine. If you can shoot a picture of the engine bay and post it here, I can tell you exactly what it is.

RE: buying a 944s
Ok thanks, I will take a picture when i go to see it in the next few days. I read somewhere that there are sets of numbers in spare tyre well that give option codes, would these tell you if it was infact a S? many thanks

RE: buying a 944s
i found that the engine was infact a 2.5 dohc. the guy was just a little confused. There was one thing that bothered me when i drove it. It seemed rough at idle, felt a bit like you were sitting in a diesel truck. Would this be because of the engine mounts? or is it normal due to the large cylinder displacement?
