Default My first car

I am a new Porsche owner and new to cars in general. This is the first car I have ever owned and so forgive me if I sound like I don't know what I am doing or talking about (I don't at all--raised by a single mom). That is the reason why I have joined you guys--so I can learn al little about my new baby--she's a beauty, too: an '85 944 (not a turbo).

I have a few problems to start off with though.
The car was a gift to me by an older family member about this time last year. I am currently going to college at UCSB and, naturally, I have no moeny. This car is a fun toy, but not the most practical for my situation as I know the parts are quite expensive as is labor. However, I want to do everything and anything to keep her around for as long as I can.

I am emberrassed to say that I have not been very good to it lately either. (really emberrassed). Since I have gotten her I have been backed into, rear-ended, the exhaust manifold has cracked, and (as I said before I know nothing about cars) I think part of my transmission shaft(?) disconnected. Now the car squeals when I turn it on. I haven't had the money or the time to invest in it until recently. Now, the battery is dead, the tires are flat, and I feel like a total idiot.

I really don't want to sell it because it is my link to the real world away from school. Plus it is a real cherry oldie but goodie. I really am proud of her. She is so damn fun to drive!!!

I wanted to humbly ask for your advice

The dead battery is not a problem--I have jumper cables
However, I am emberrassed to ask your advice on what I should do about the flat tires. I'd like to get the car to the mechanic to fix the fanbelt (which I am hoping is the reason for the squeal).
On that note, how much do you think it will cost to fix the fanbelt?
If you have any other advice or stickies to point me in the direction of, I'd love to hear it.

Otherwise, It will be nice to meet you all.

Cheers and thank you!!

Crawl underneath the car and adjust the tension on the alternator and PS belts. This is the simplest of jobs beyond adding oil to your car. If you don't want to take on this job yourself, you will never be able to afford to keep the car on the road.

As far as the flat tires....pull them off and take them to a tire store and fill them with air, check for nails, etc.

My `89 Lux squeals like a bastard when you turn it on, but that's the power steering trying to work when all the hydraulic fluid has leaked out. Doesn't do your car any good, but not terminal either. Check the power steering fluid levels. If it's anything like mine, should be pretty solid, innearly 2 years mine has given me little to complain about
