Default New 944 owner.....asking a couple questions

So, I picked up an 84 944 for $1200 (a steal). I've put in a bunch of time, reading and some maintenance and I'm driving and enjoying it allready. I'm just wondering if I could get a little help on some issues...

1. my car seems to be missing a part. I see it in pictures and in the Haynes manual pics....but no idea what it is or what was or hooked up to it. Itwould have sat in the engine bay, just on the other side of the battery. any ideas?
2. car seems to rev down a bit here and there during idle after driving a bit. Everything I read points to checking vacuum lines for leaks......if anyone has a link to any help with this I would greatly appreciate it.....I have no idea what I'm looking for.
3. the timing belt thing....lots of people mentioning it in forums and such.....car seems fine....but can you even check this matter.....is there a sound when its ready to fail? or a performance change? Is it expensive to get changed? Is it worth getting that special tool?

Sorry....lots at once...but these things are really bugging me...and I got to get that old car great again....

Thanks
Rob

1. I would guess the cruise control module.
2. If idle dips when you put the clutch it, I would suspect vacuum leak or bad ISV (I can't remember if the early cars used ISV or not)
3. No way to inspect the belt. Bite the bullet, replace the belts, rollers, and waterpump. It will fail with ZERO warning, and you will all of a sudden be spending more to fix the car than what you paid for it.
