a loud whiny/whir that would drop out occasionally when revving engine but wants to stay in there...I have no idea - was a cold moning- will start-up again tomorrow and have a listen/look.. car has sat a lot over the winter but did some start-ups a few times each month - was A-OK last fall...

 

Was it more of a whistle or a belt? Used 2003 Audi A4 Portland Oregon

 

more of a high-pitched whine but not like a belt - ran car and noise seems to have gone away after warm-up but I've never heard that before so I am skeptical - perhaps the alternator is going, though charging is fine. Power steering unit has adequate fluid - I have always thought power steering is weak on this car - I mean you bearly notice it is power assisted compared to other cars I have where you can turn wheel lock to lock with one finger. maybe that whole system is not working properly..thanks for you reply

 

Did you check the rear bolt on the air conditioning compressor?

Mine fell out and did the very same thing, LOL.
