Default non turbo engine uneven acceleration

My 87 944 accelerates unevenly, almost like the engine is missing. I don't detect any ignition type missing but it almost stumbles during acceleration. I recently bought the car and it is heavily documented. All of the belts and tensioners have been serviced on schedule and I'm looking for other possitilities. I've considered a full tune-up but that sounds like a "shotgun approach". I was wondering if there's a possibility that the injectors might be at fault. Car has 100300 miles and no evidence of having overheated (by virtue of the condition of the reservior). Idle's a bit erratic when rpm's drop to idle from cruising rpm. Doesn't fluctuate up and down, just not very smooth. Maybe just because it's a 4 cylinder.
